The story of Manakkadavu Pastorate

“The smallest shall become a thousand, and the least one a mighty nation.” — Isaiah 60:22

The CSI Manakkadavu Pastorate is part of the CSI Tiruchirappalli–Thanjavur Diocese. Though it serves a rural area, the pastorate has developed into an important centre of Christian worship and congregational life. Its beginnings are associated with the missionary work of the Methodist tradition and the growth of Christian communities in the surrounding villages.

Historical Background

The early Christian witness in this region was shaped by the arrival of missionary workers and the response of local communities. A movement of people embraced the Christian faith, and congregations gradually formed in Manakkadavu and the neighbouring settlements. The growth of these communities was accompanied by the establishment of worshipping groups and the development of a shared congregational identity.

The ministry of the pastorate has extended across several villages in the region, including Manakkadavu, Alangiyam, Kolappatti, Thungavi, Perichipalayam, Undarpatti, Mettuvellavu, Karuppayampalayam and other neighbouring settlements. Through worship, prayer, pastoral visitation and fellowship, the church has continued to serve Christian families across this rural area.

Education and community welfare have formed an important part of the church’s wider contribution. Educational initiatives were established and developed, including primary-level schooling, and support was provided for children and families. The church’s concern for education and social well-being has complemented its spiritual ministry.

The pastorate’s work has been sustained by successive pastors and church leaders. Their ministry, together with the commitment of local church members, helped to strengthen the congregations and extend the church’s witness in the region.

The development of the pastorate has also been supported by the leadership of the Diocese. During the episcopacy of Bishop Rt. Rev. Dr. D. Chandrasekaran, a new phase of church development was undertaken, including the construction and dedication of a church building. This marked a significant milestone in the continuing growth of the Christian community.

Continuing Witness

Today, the CSI Manakkadavu Pastorate continues its ministry through worship, spiritual nurture, education, pastoral care and service to the surrounding villages. Its journey reflects the faith and perseverance of generations of believers, missionaries, pastors and lay leaders who have contributed to the growth of Christian witness in this region.
