The story of Mulanur Pastorate

“The Lord has been our dwelling place in all generations.” — Psalm 90:1

The history of the CSI Mulanur Pastorate is closely connected with the early development of Christian mission and education in the Mulanur region. In 1920, a primary school was established at Mulanur, an important beginning for the organised educational and missionary work of the area. The school became a focal point for the community and contributed to the gradual growth of Christian witness in Mulanur and the neighbouring villages.

Historical Background

The early mission was strengthened through the work of local evangelists, teachers and church workers, who visited the surrounding settlements, shared the Christian faith and nurtured emerging congregations. Rev. J. J. Ellis was among the early missionaries associated with the work in the region. Through their ministry and the response of local families, Christian communities developed in Mulanur and nearby villages.

As the work expanded, congregations were formed in several surrounding villages. The Mulanur Pastorate’s early area of ministry included Kannivadi, Kolathupalayam and Koothampoondi, alongside other neighbouring communities. These congregations grew through worship, prayer, pastoral visitation and the commitment of local believers. In 1925, the pastorate’s ministry was further strengthened by the service of successive pastors and workers.

The church’s contribution also included education and community development. The primary school established in 1920 continued to play an important part in the life of the locality. Over the years, educational initiatives and facilities were strengthened, reflecting the congregation’s concern for the learning and well-being of children and families.

A community hall was built in Mulanur in 2002, providing a space for congregational and community activities. Further development of the church’s facilities followed. During the ministry of Rev. N. Jeyapal, a new church building was constructed and dedicated in 2020 by Rt. Rev. Dr. D. Chandrasekaran, Bishop of the CSI Tiruchirappalli–Thanjavur Diocese. These developments marked significant milestones in the continuing life of the congregation.

The pastorate’s history also reflects the dedicated service of successive ministers and church workers across generations, among them Rev. J. J. Ellis and Rev. N. Jeyapal. Their ministry, together with the contributions of local evangelists, teachers, office-bearers and congregation members, helped to sustain Christian witness and strengthen the church’s presence in the region.

Continuing Witness

Today, the CSI Mulanur Pastorate continues its ministry through worship, prayer, pastoral care, education and community engagement. Its journey from the educational initiative of 1920 to the continuing development of its congregations stands as a testimony to the faith, perseverance and service of generations of believers.

“Unless the Lord builds the house, the builders labour in vain.”
